Ranma 欄間

Japanese homes boast numerous unique features, and one of these is the 'ranma.' Positioned above sliding doors or entrances, the ranma is a small opening between the ceiling and upper frame, designed to usher in natural light and ventilate rooms.

Entrance door ranma is typically simple, prioritizing functionality over elaborate decorations. In contrast, Japanese-style rooms often showcase intricately adorned ranma with braided wood, carvings, and other ornate details.

Given the narrow entryways in many Japanese homes, inserting windows may be impractical, resulting in darker spaces when doors are closed. The ranma ingeniously addresses this issue, imparting a bright and open ambiance to such areas.

There exists a rich variety of ranma, featuring carved flowers, birds, landscapes, hollowed-out designs, or kumiko—a delicate woodworking craft forming intricate patterns without nails or metal fittings. The design possibilities for ranma are virtually limitless, emphasizing the need for light and air passage.

Although ranma is less common in modern home construction, skilled craftsmen can still create these beautiful pieces. Additionally, you can find used or old ranma available for purchase.
